This is a very good article in the light of understanding the ever increasing presence and influence of the Chinese in the Pacific. It also provides a good assessment of the latest US move to bolster its links with its Pacific allies.
One key difference is the Chinese policy of bankrolling a great deal of the much needed projects for Pacific island nations during tough economic times.
For the Chinese in particular, the approach is paying handsome dividends through support by Pacific nations at international fora and, of course, markets for each its cheap goods sold at sheltered currency rates.
